Part 2.1 Definition and Meaning
ADNOMINATIO - assigning to a proper name its literal or homophonic meaning; also, paronomasia or polyptoton.
CONNOTATION - in a literary work, an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its dictionary definition; an implication that goes beyond the actual meaning of a word.
DEFINIENS - word or words used in a dictionary definition
DEICTIC - characteristic of a word whose reference depends on the circumstances of its use; also, a deictic word. "This," which means nothing outside of context.
DENOTATION - the precise/actual meaning of a word outside of the feelings it evokes; the dictionary meaning of a word or phrase. In fiction writing, writers will play off a word's denotative meaning against its connotations or implied associational implications.
DOUBLE ENTENDRE - a double meaning or interpretation for a word, phrase, or figure of speech. The first meaning is straightforward, but can be interpreted in a second more slightly inappropriate or risqué way.
ENTHYMEME - a logical deduction in which one of the premises is unstated.
EPITHET - a descriptive word or phrase. "The Great Emancipator," as a substitute for Abraham Lincoln. Also, an abusive or contemptuous word or phrase; a slur.
GLYPH - a symbol, such as on a public sign, that imparts information without words, especially a figure or character incised or in relief.
HETERONYM - a word which has the same spelling but different meaning and pronunciation as another; a type of homograph. "Produce," meaning, "fruits and vegetables," and "produce," meaning, "to bring forth."
HOMOGRAPH - a word which has the same spelling as another but different meaning, derivation, or pronunciation. Same as "homogram." See also: heteronym, homonym, homophone.
HOMONYM - a word that has the same spelling and pronunciation as another but different meanings or derivations; a word that is both a homograph and a homophone
HOMOPHONE - a word which has the same pronunciation as another but different meaning, derivation, or spelling.
HYPERNYM - a word that is more generic than a given word.
HYPONYM - a word that is more specific than a given word.
INFERENCE - the process of drawing a conclusion from supporting evidence. It’s going beyond the evidence to reach some further conclusion.
LOGOGRAM - written symbol that represents an entire word without expressing its pronunciation. Same as ideogram and logograph.
LEXIGRAPHY - art of definition of words
LUCUS A NON LUCENDO - an etymological contradiction in which a modern word is derived from an older word of contradictory meaning. "Beldam," meaning, "ugly hag," comes from the French word "bellum," meaning, "beautiful thing."
METONYMY - figurative use of word to name an attribute of its subject
MELIORATION - linguistic process of a word gradually becoming more positive in meaning or connotation over time. Although both melioration and amelioration can be used to describe the general process of improvement of anything, melioration is more commonly used with respect to the meaning of words undergoing this change.
MERISM - grouping of words that means something other than the combined meanings of each of the words individually.
PALABRA - a word; talk
PARAGRAPHIA - writing of different letters and words than intended
PARANYM - euphemism; word whose meaning altered to conceal evasion
PATRONYMIC - of or relating to the name of one's father or a paternal ancestor; also, a name so derived.
PEJORATION - linguistic process of a word gradually becoming more negative in meaning or connotation over time.
PLOCE - repetition of a word to emphasize or extend meaning.
POLYSEMANT - word with many meanings
POLYSEMOUS - characterized by having many meanings.
POLYSEMY - when a single word, phrase or concept has more than one meaning or connotation.
PRIVATIVE - altering the meaning of a term from positive to negative; also, a privative prefix or suffix.
PSEUDOANTONYM - word that appears to mean the opposite of what it actually means (unloosen; inflammable; ingenious; despoil; impassive).
PURR WORD - a word with positive connotations and therefore desirable to use in building and sustaining good public relations.

UNIVOCAL- having only one meaning
VERISIMILITUDE - the appearance of being true or real.
ZEUGMA - when you use a word in a sentence once, while conveying two different meanings at the same time.
