Part 1.3a: Word Misuse & Misinterpretation
APHESIS - mispronouncing a word by dropping one or more initial, usually unstressed syllables. "'cept" instead of "except."
CACOLOGY - bad choice of words or faulty pronunciation
CATACHRESIS - harsh metaphor involving the use of a word beyond its normal function, usually incorrectly.
DENOMINALIZATION - using a word that is not a verb as a verb
DITTOGRAPH - a letter or word repeated unintentionally in writing or copying.
EGGCORN - when a misspelling still makes sense in the context of a sentence
FLEXILOQUENT - speaking ambiguously or using words of doubtful meaning
HETEROPHEMY - accidental use of word different from that meant
LEXIPHANIC - bombastic; sesquipedalian; using many long words
MALAPROPISM - the practice of misusing words by substituting words with similar sounding words that have different and unconnected meanings. It creates confusion, misunderstanding and amusement.
MUMPSIMUS - a language error, such as with spelling or pronunciation, that is committed repeatedly, especially after correction; also, a person who repeatedly commits such an error or insists on perpetuating it.
PARASYNESIS - corruption of forms of words
PERIPHRASIS - the use of excessive language and extra words to convey a meaning that could be simplified directly with fewer words.
PLEONASM - the use of more words than those necessary to denote mere sense
SOLECISM - a mistake in the use of language; also, an offense against good manners or etiquette.
TECHNOPROPISM - unintentionally funny misuse of a technical word or phrase (for example "We'll release the product once it passes the fault infection test").
VERBICIDE - destroying the meaning of a word
